What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making your business get cited inside the answers AI engines give, instead of just listed on a results page.

For twenty years, search marketing meant SEO. Get to the top of Google, rank for a keyword, get the click. In 2026, that game has been joined by a new one. Roughly 40% of research-style queries now begin in an AI engine instead of a Google search box. The answer the user gets is a single paragraph naming two or three businesses. If your business is named, you win the lead. If not, you do not exist.

Answer Engine Optimization is the work of making sure your business is one of the names. It is a different discipline from SEO, with different signals and a different metric.

The five things AEO actually requires

  1. Crawlability. A robots.txt that explicitly allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. An llms.txt at the root of your site.
  2. Structured data. JSON-LD Schema.org markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage) on every page so the LLM can quote your facts cleanly.
  3. Cite-worthy content. Q&A-formatted articles with specific verifiable claims, real numbers, dated. Not 10,000-word keyword-stuffed listicles.
  4. External citations. Mentions on Wikipedia, news outlets, GitHub, Reddit, HARO/Featured.com, and real reviews on the platforms that matter for your vertical.
  5. Tracking. Daily queries across the AI engines for the buying-intent prompts your customers use, counting how often you get named.

Why it matters now

The cost of starting late is being late. The local businesses that began AEO work in 2024 are now the default answer in their categories. That position is hard to displace once it sticks. A 12-month head start compounds.

The cheapest version of getting started is running a free audit against your own URL, then shipping the foundation (robots, llms, schema) yourself in a weekend. From there, the ongoing content and citation work is what scales.

Common questions

What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the discipline of making a business get cited inside the answers given by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, instead of just listed on a search results page.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking on a search results page. AEO optimizes for being named inside the AI-generated answer. SEO weighs backlinks and keywords heavily; AEO weighs structured data, specific verifiable claims, and citations from high-trust sources.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Most local businesses still need both. SEO still matters for transactional and navigational searches that go to Google. AEO matters for informational and comparison queries that increasingly go to AI engines. They run together.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Initial movement shows up in 30 to 60 days after a foundation pass (robots.txt, llms.txt, JSON-LD schema, Q&A content). Citation rate against buying-intent prompts typically improves 25% to 50% in the first 90 days, with bigger compounding gains after 6 to 9 months.
What does an AEO program cost?
Doing it in-house takes 8 to 12 hours per week from a dedicated person. Hiring an agency costs $1,000 to $5,000 per month. Traccion Visibility runs $649 to $2,449 per month with daily tracking, weekly content, and citation building.
